Interview Tips

Over the last couple of years, the approach to interviews has changed dramatically with the help of technology, with many stages of the process if not all in some cases, being completed via video call.

This is something that can help speed up the process but should not be seen as an informal option. Here are a few key tips to help ensure you are prepared for your interview with your future employer.
Basics:
-
Visit the company website, LinkedIn account and understand the company.
-
Research the hiring manager, information can be found on LinkedIn. Looking over their work history and background helps with familiarity prior to interview.
-
Have the job description to hand – great to refer to when applying your experience.
-
This is a 2-way process, an opportunity for both parties to understand more about each other, have questions ready.
-
You can ask for the question to be repeated … don’t trip over your answers.
-
Ask about the next stages and when you would be likely to hear back.. manage the process from your side too.
-
Be yourself and enjoy the process… you have got this far!
Video call:
-
Ensure you have the correct time, day, and link – don’t leave it until 5 minutes before your interview to check.
-
Do you have sufficient connection and battery – have your laptop or device fully charged or plugged in.
-
Is your camera switched on… and are you dressed for an interview?
-
Blur your background and make sure you are somewhere that is quiet and away from distraction. If you know there may be some disruption throughout the call, highlight this at the beginning – manage those expectations.
-
If you haven’t been notified to who else will be on the interview, check the invites and check the names out on LinkedIn.
-
Technology can be unpredictable, should there be an issue last minute contact your consultant or hiring manager as soon as you can.
Onsite:
-
Check travel times. If you are on public transport ensure you are running ahead of time - running late, let your consultant, or the hiring manager know.
-
Parking.. if this is something that hasn’t been passed on, ask prior to the interview, or allow time for finding somewhere.
-
As a rule, arrive 10 minutes before your interview. This allows for any delays, and you can then mentally prepare without the rush of finding the building etc.
-
Dress smart – first impressions count.
-
Turn your phone off / do not disturb – we don’t need any disturbances.
-
Be confident, introduce yourself fully, offer a handshake.. and smile!
Nerves are normal, but being prepared will help navigate the process easier for you.
